What is defense superior service medal?

The Defense Superior Service Medal (DSSM) is a military decoration awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces who have rendered superior meritorious service in a position of significant responsibility. The medal was established by President Gerald Ford on February 6, 1976.

The DSSM is typically awarded to senior officers and flag officers, as well as civilian employees serving in key leadership positions within the Department of Defense. Recipients are recognized for their exceptional contributions to national security and their exemplary performance in roles such as commanding a combat unit, leading a large military organization, or serving in a critical staff position.

The medal is presented in the form of a bronze medal with a blue enamel center disk surrounded by a laurel wreath. The medal is worn on the left chest and is ranked just below the Defense Meritorious Service Medal in order of precedence.

In addition to the medal, recipients also receive a ribbon bar, mini-medal, and citation certifying their award. The medal is a prestigious honor and is one of the highest awards that can be given to members of the U.S. Armed Forces for distinguished service.
